Education Why Early Surgery Might Be Best for Your Child's Undescended Testicle
As parents, we want what’s best for our children’s health and development. When faced with a diagnosis like undescended testicle (undescended testis), it’s natural to have questions and concerns. One question that often arises is:
When is the best time for surgery?
In many cases, pediatric surgeons recommend early surgery, usually between 6 and 18 months of age. While this might seem surprising, there are several important reasons behind this recommendation. Here’s what you need to know:
Benefits of Early Surgery:
- Improved Fertility Potential: Studies have shown that early surgery can improve a child’s future fertility. Undescended testicles exposed to higher abdominal temperatures for extended periods can negatively impact sperm production. Early intervention helps ensure the testicle is in the cooler environment of the scrotum where it can develop properly.
- Reduced Risk of Testicular Cancer: While rare, undescended testicles have a slightly higher risk of developing cancer later in life. Bringing the testicle down into the scrotum allows for easier monitoring and self-examination in the future.
- Improved Inguinal Hernia Repair: Sometimes, an undescended testicle can be accompanied by an inguinal hernia. Early surgery can address both issues simultaneously, minimizing recovery time and potential complications.
- Shorter Recovery: Young children tend to bounce back from surgery quicker and experience less anxiety compared to older children.
Addressing Parental Concerns:
We understand that surgery can be a daunting prospect for parents. Here are some common concerns we hear and how early intervention can help:
- Pain and Discomfort: Modern surgical techniques and pain management strategies minimize discomfort for your child.
- Long-Term Effects: Early surgery is minimally invasive and generally has a very low risk of complications. The benefits for your child’s future health far outweigh the risks.
- Emotional Impact: While surgery itself might be stressful, it’s important to remember that an undescended testicle can cause emotional distress for your child later in life. Early intervention helps prevent future issues with self-esteem and body image.
Next Steps:
If your child has been diagnosed with undescended testicle, discuss all your questions and concerns with your pediatric surgeon. They will explain the details of your child’s specific case and why early surgery might be the best course of action. Early detection and treatment are crucial for your child’s long-term health and well-being.
Remember, you’re not alone in this journey. Our team of pediatric surgeons is here to answer your questions, provide support, and ensure the best possible outcome for your child.

Helping Tiny Kidneys Drain Better: Pyeloplasty for Childhood Hydronephrosis
Kidneys are the amazing little organs that filter waste from our blood, producing urine. Urine then travels down thin tubes called ureters to the bladder. But sometimes, this drainage system can get blocked, especially in children. This blockage, at the junction of the kidney and ureter, is called Uretero-Pelvic Junction Obstruction (UPJO) and can lead to a condition called hydronephrosis.
Hydronephrosis simply means a swollen kidney. When urine can’t drain properly, it backs up into the kidney, causing it to enlarge. While this may not cause immediate symptoms, it can affect long-term kidney function if left untreated. Thankfully, there’s a surgical solution called pyeloplasty that can help children with hydronephrosis.

What are rectal polyps?
Rectal polyps are small, benign growths that can develop in the lining of the rectum or colon. In children, they’re typically non-cancerous and often resolve on their own.
